Political Participation of Persons with Disabilities: State of Play report ahead of European Elections

As the European Elections are fast approaching, and European citizens prepare to cast their votes, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has published a new insightful report on the Political Participation of People with Disabilities in the EU, highlighting recent developments and ongoing challenges. The report notes legal restrictions in seven countries that still exclude people under legal guardianship from voting, while other nations have removed such restrictions and offer support. Accessibility improvements in polling stations and election materials have been made, yet significant barriers remain for those with visual, hearing, or intellectual disabilities. Additionally, while 17 EU countries have disability strategies addressing political participation, consultation with disability organisations is often lacking. To ensure everyone’s rights are respected, the FRA suggests lifting voting restrictions, enhancing accessibility, providing disability awareness training, and removing administrative barriers. Finally, the report also showcases promising practices like accessible campaigns and dedicated transport for voters, highlighting the importance of inclusive infrastructure and services which enables persons with disabilities to fulfil their rights.
