Council of the EU Final Greenlight for the AI Act

On 20 May 2024, the Council of the EU approved the Regulation laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence – also known as the Artificial Intelligence Act. This landmark legislation follows a ‘risk-based’ approach, which means the higher the risk to cause harm to society, the stricter the rules. It is the first of its kind in the world and can set a global standard for AI regulation. The Act aims to ensure AI development and deployment are safe, trustworthy, and respectful of fundamental rights across the EU’s single market by both private and public actors. It marks a significant step in positioning the EU at the forefront of AI governance and innovation, and has important implications for persons with disabilities. The AI Act and much more will be discussed by experts and policymakers at the  EPR Annual Conference 2024 “AI and New Technologies for Inclusion: Leaving no one behind in the digital transition” in Malaga.
